How much does a website cost in 2026? Transparent pricing vs. hidden costs

Every month we get the same question: "why is the price for a website anywhere from a few hundred to several thousand dollars?" The answer isn't that some people are scamming you, it's that most quotes aren't measuring the same thing.

What a real price actually includes

• Design: custom design or template customization.
• Development: code that actually fits your process, not a generic CMS bolted together.
• Content structure: so visitors find what they're looking for, not just "looks nice".
• Maintenance: who fixes it when something breaks six months from now?

If a quote only covers one or two of these, that's not a cheaper solution, it's just a smaller one.

The most common hidden cost

With "template customization" quotes, the maintenance fee is almost always left out of the initial price, then shows up as a separate invoice 3-4 months later. Ask upfront: what happens next year if you want to expand the site, or a plugin update breaks something?

What to check when requesting a quote

1. Ask for a fixed price, in writing. If the quote says "approximately," that's your risk, not theirs.
2. Ask about ownership. Does the code, domain, and content stay yours, or are you locked into the developer's system?
3. Ask what happens in month 7. Who updates it, who fixes it, and for how much?
